As piercings are fresh wounds, it is very important to keep them clean! We recommend cleaning the piercing twice a day with a sterile saline solution. First, wash your hands. Then, spray saline onto the piercing, leave for 30-60 seconds and gently wipe away any buildup using clean, dry non-woven gauze or kitchen towel.
Excess moisture is damaging to a healing piercing. After cleaning with saline solution, gently and thoroughly dry your piercing with a clean, dry piece of non-woven gauze or kitchen towel. We advise also doing this again after showering. We strongly advise against swimming or otherwise submerging your new piercing for a minimum of 6 weeks after getting pierced. This is to prevent the buildup of excess moisture as well as the introduction of harmful bacteria.
Touching, picking at, twisting/rotating or playing with your piercing will be detrimental to your healing process! Ideally, you should only be touching your piercing when cleaning it, with freshly washed hands! Touching repeatedly will not only introduce bacteria but can cause irritation and discomfort. We recommend avoiding things that may cause the piercing to be knocked or otherwise subject to excess pressure while it heals, such as sleeping on the piercing site or wearing tight, restrictive clothing that rubs against the piercing site.
Oral piercings (piercings contained entirely within the mouth, ie. tongue and smiley piercings) are a little different, but in a good way! As your mouth is full of natural, friendly bacteria, these piercings typically heal a little quicker. To clean your piercing, we recommend rinsing no more than 5 times per day with a non-alcoholic mouthwash (once in the morning, once after each main meal and once at night) and maintaining a good, consistent oral hygiene routine. We advise against smoking and drinking alcohol for the duration of your healing process as this can promote excess swelling and discomfort, and can be harmful to your piercing. For lip piercings (eg. labret, medusa) we advise combining this aftercare regime with a twice-daily saline clean on the outside. Please do not spray saline directly into your mouth!
We offer a wide range of intimate piercings at Love and Ink. These piercings require an in-person consultation beforehand where you will be given a comprehensive overview of the aftercare for your desired piercing.
Because piercings are wounds that your body is working hard to heal, it is likely you will notice some redness, swelling, tenderness and possibly some bleeding in the first few days after getting pierced. These results and their duration are different for everybody and swelling/tenderness in particular can last for several weeks. Just because your piercing is no longer sore, doesn't mean it is healed! While your piercing is healing, you may notice some whiteish discharge from your piercing that dries into what we call 'crusties'. This is completely normal and will simply come away with cleaning. If at any point you are concerned about your piercing, we encourage you to get in touch with your piercer so that they can help you!
When getting pierced, your piercer will install a piece of jewellery with a little extra length or space; this is to give the piercing space to comfortably swell as it heals. After 4-6 weeks, we advise you to return to the studio to allow for a shorter piece of jewellery to be fitted. We refer to this as a 'downsize'. Keeping the longer piece of jewellery in for longer than is necessary can result in irritation, lumps and bumps, and may permanently, negatively affect the appearance of the piercing.
Healing times vary depending on the location of the piercing as well as how your body deals with it! For most piercings on the body, a full heal will take anywhere between 6-12 months. Your piercing may feel healed before it is. Your piercer will advise you on the rough healing timeframe for your piercing at your appointment.
